What is Intuitive Eating, Anyway?

Intuitive Eating is a way of relating to food and our bodies that relies on internal signals, self-care, and compassion — instead of the external rules and shame that diet culture hands us.
It was developed in 1995 by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, both Registered Dietitians, and it’s been studied extensively ever since. What began as a gentler alternative to dieting has grown into a well-researched framework associated with better body image, less disordered eating, and more stable relationships with food.
The framework has ten principles, and we’ll walk through each of them here on the blog. But at its core, Intuitive Eating is about rebuilding trust. Trust between you and your hunger. Trust between you and your fullness. Trust that your body is not an adversary, and that it doesn’t need to be fixed.
It’s not a weight-loss program. It’s not a “hunger and fullness diet.” It’s not a system of rules dressed up in softer language. It’s the opposite — an ongoing practice of attuning to yourself, in a culture that constantly tries to pull you away.
If that sounds like a long road, it is. And it’s one worth walking.
